her daily bread

Today I walked down to Morning Times(oh, I love you MT soy chai), and got a bagel (and a soy chai) with cream cheese and lox.  I was walking back to work, when a girl followed me out and said, “Excuse me, can I ask you something?”  She looked about 22, a bit overweight, her hair in a tight ponytail.  I thought she might be asking for directions.

“Can you help me get some food?”

I said no.  I don’t know why.  I was standing there in my brand name boots, my brand name pants, my brand name shirt, and I said no.

And then I realized I was holding a big bag of bagel.  And I said yes.  Actually, I said, “Here – take this.” And I gave her the bag.  She said thank you.  And I walked back to work with only a soy chai, wishing I had asked her her name.
