My 2015 Favourites | Portrait + Lifestyle

I’m a big fan of looking forward to the future and setting goals and dreams in a new year. But I think it’s just as important to celebrate the past – to look back and see what went well (and what didn’t), and give thanks for how far you’ve come. In that spirit, I just tried to choose my 20 top photos from last year, and I couldn’t do it. So I’ve decided to cheat.

Today, I’m sharing my favourite photos from the portrait and lifestyle sessions I shot in 2015. Tomorrow, I’ll share my favourite moments from my 2015 weddings.

When it comes to shooting couples and families, I’ve learned a couple of things about myself this year:

  1. I LOVE shooting in people’s homes. Some of my favourite sessions this year were families making coffee, and pregnant women on their own beds. Being in your own house makes you feel comfortable and relaxed, and that makes for photos of you looking like yourself. I also love that you’ll be able to look back at those images in 20 years and remember exactly what your life looked like when you were 25 and waiting for your first son to be born, or 40 and laughing at your 12-year-old’s bad jokes.
  2. I’m not a “pose-y” photographer. When I first started out, I tried to copy poses I saw other photographers doing, and it just never really worked. What I love to do now is to ask a couple to interact with each other – to walk toward one another, for one to tell the other a joke, for a man to sweep his wife’s hair back from her face. One thing you’ll never hear me say is, “Act natural.” Simon compares it to being a kid and trying on new school shoes. Remember that? How the salesman would tell you to walk across the shop floor in your new shoes, and suddenly you couldn’t remember how you normally walked? Telling people to “act natural” is a surefire way to get them to act like drunk robots.

But I digress. What was I saying again? Oh yeah, these are my favourites from my 2015 portrait and lifestyle sessions. I love them. I hope you do too.
