Why Stormy Wedding Weather is my Favourite Wedding Weather

One of my best friends is Finnish, and when she lived here in England, I was always really amazed at how she’d show up to the park, no matter the weather, with all the right gear on: the perfect jacket, her kids in weatherproof all-in-one bodysuits, wellies for everyone. She moved back to Finland a few years ago, and I’ve been to visit her a couple times and have been really interested to find that it’s not just her – it’s Finland. They’re always prepared, no matter what.

I mentioned this to my friend the first time I visited her, and she told me the Finnish have a saying:

“There’s no bad weather, only bad clothes.”

When there’s snow on the ground six months out of the year, I guess you have to just be prepared for that. Otherwise you’d never go outside.

Things aren’t quite that extreme in England, but if you live here you know you can’t always bank on the weather. Over the years, though, I’ve learned to appreciate English weather and, to be honest, when it comes to shooting weddings and couples sessions, I actually prefer extreme weather.

On sunny wedding days, I often hear grandmothers say, “You couldn’t ask for better wedding weather”…but I’m personally kind of partial to wind and rain. It makes for dramatic, beautiful, romantic pictures – just the kind I like.

Here are a few times the weather was horrible, but I managed to work with these incredible couples to use it to our advantage and create raw, intimate images.
